Decom Engineering has expanded its presence in the mooring chain cutting sector, securing nine chain-focused projects so far in 2026 and boosting revenue. Two-thirds of those projects are installation campaigns, reflecting a strategic shift beyond the Aberdeen-headquartered company's traditional decommissioning market. The growth is driven by demand for its C1-16UL and C1-10 Chopsaws, proprietary tools designed to span both ends of the asset lifecycle, from removing legacy infrastructure to installing new offshore assets.

The Cutting Technology

 

The company offers specialised cutting tools. The C1-16UL is the larger saw. It targets diameters from around 120 millimetres. It was developed with mooring chain in mind. It was first trialled in Brazil in 2025.

The tools deliver strong performance. A West Africa campaign showed this recently. Individual cuts took around 11 minutes. Mooring lines under 400 tonnes were severed. The smaller C1-10 handles lighter chain below 120 millimetres.

 

The Supporting Innovation

 

The company offers a further innovation. This is a retention clamp system. It creates an artificial stud on studless chain. This secures the cut link in position. It allows recovery before clamp removal.

This addresses a key safety concern. Company leadership stressed its value. It allows work on live assets. Dropped objects are unacceptable there. The clamp mitigates this risk effectively.

 

The Fleet and Outlook

 

The company is expanding its fleet. Two units are permanently in Brazil. Two more work off Canada. Others are active in several regions. These span the US, UK and Cameroon.

The company plans further growth. It will have 10 larger Chopsaws by end of 2026. Four smaller units are also planned. Company leadership cited floating wind growth. This should drive demand for chain cutting.
