Fact-Checking & Verification Policy

How we verify what we publish.

Ocean Economist verifies information before publishing it. This policy describes the standards our reporters and editors apply to ensure our reporting is accurate and well sourced.

1) Verification before publication

Before an article is published, we check that:

  • Material facts are confirmed against primary sources or credible documentation.
  • Significant claims are supported by more than one independent source where possible.
  • Names, titles, dates, figures, and quotations are checked for accuracy.
  • Statistics and data are traced to their original source and presented in context.
  • Quotes accurately reflect what was said and are not taken out of context.

2) Sourcing standards

We prioritise primary sources — official filings, regulatory data, scientific research, company statements, and named experts. When we rely on third-party reporting, we attribute it clearly and, where possible, independently confirm the underlying facts. We are transparent when information cannot be independently verified.

3) Data and scientific claims

Coverage of the ocean economy frequently involves scientific and financial data. We seek to represent research accurately, note uncertainty and methodology where relevant, and link to original studies, datasets, or filings so readers can review the evidence themselves.

4) Expert and guest contributions

Analysis and commentary from external contributors are reviewed by an editor for accuracy and fairness before publication. Contributors are identified together with their role and affiliation so readers can weigh their perspective.

5) Developing stories

For fast-moving stories, we publish what we can verify and clearly flag what remains unconfirmed. As facts are established, we update the article and, where the change is significant, time-stamp it.

6) When we get it wrong

If an error reaches publication, we correct it transparently in line with our Corrections Policy. Our broader standards are set out in our Editorial Policy and Ethics & Standards.

7) Report a concern
