Ethics & Standards

The values that guide how we report and conduct ourselves.

Ocean Economist holds itself to professional standards of journalism. This code sets out the ethical principles we expect of everyone who reports, edits, or contributes to our publication. It complements our Editorial Policy.

1) Independence and integrity

We report without fear or favour. Our coverage is not influenced by advertisers, sponsors, investors, or political interests. We do not accept gifts, payment, or hospitality that could compromise — or appear to compromise — our independence.

2) Accuracy and fairness

We aim to be accurate and fair. Where we report significant criticism of a person or organisation, we seek to give them a fair opportunity to respond before publication. We do not knowingly publish false or misleading information, and we correct errors openly under our Corrections Policy.

3) Transparency and attribution

We are transparent about where our information comes from. We attribute facts to their sources, distinguish reporting from opinion, and label sponsored or partner content clearly so it is never confused with independent journalism.

4) Sources and confidentiality

We prefer named, on-the-record sources. Where we grant confidentiality to a source — for example to protect someone from retaliation — we honour that commitment and take care to verify the information through other means wherever possible.

5) Conflicts of interest

Journalists and contributors must avoid conflicts of interest and disclose any financial, commercial, or personal interest relevant to what they write. Where a relevant interest exists, it is disclosed to readers.

6) Diversity and respect

We aim to cover the global ocean economy fairly and inclusively, reflecting a range of regions, communities, and perspectives — including those of coastal and developing nations that are often under-represented. We report on people with accuracy and respect and do not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, religion, nationality, disability, or sexual orientation.

7) Plagiarism and originality

Plagiarism and fabrication are never acceptable. We credit the work of others and link to original reporting and source material.

8) Privacy and harm

We weigh the public interest against the potential for harm. We respect individual privacy and exercise particular care when reporting on vulnerable people.

9) Accountability

We hold ourselves accountable to our readers. Concerns about our conduct or coverage can be raised at [email protected] and are taken seriously.
