One of the Royal Navy's smallest vessels, HMS Magpie, has conducted a detailed hydrographic survey of the Thames Estuary and the waters around London Gateway, the UK's second-largest container port. The survey provides a detailed picture of the riverbed and any changes to it, supporting safe shipping, securing underwater infrastructure and underpinning military operations. Despite measuring just 18 metres, the vessel gathered vast amounts of high-resolution data using advanced multibeam sonar, mapping the Thames with centimetre accuracy over three months.

 

The Survey Mission

 

The Royal Navy deployed a small but capable vessel. HMS Magpie carried out an extensive survey. It focused on the Thames Estuary and its key port. This was particularly around London Gateway. The port is the UK's second most important container facility.

The survey gathered substantial data. Magpie collected vast amounts of information. This provides a detailed picture of the riverbed. It captures any changes to the seabed. These could be natural or potential interference by unknown actors.

 

Purpose of the Work

 

The survey serves several important functions. It supports the safe passage of shipping in the estuary. It also supports the security of underwater infrastructure. Additionally, it lays foundations for potential future use of the waters. These purposes span both civilian and military needs.

The work has clear strategic value. It builds foundations to keep the Thames safe and open. This applies to strategic ports on the river. It ensures the waterway remains available to all users. This matters especially in times of potential conflict.

 

The Importance of London Gateway

 

The port holds considerable national significance. London Gateway opened just over a dozen years ago. It sits near Canvey Island on the Thames. It has eclipsed Southampton in scale. It is now the UK's second largest container port behind Felixstowe.

The port handles enormous trade volumes. It processed a record 3 million containers last year. Around one third of UK containerised trade flows through it. This covers both imports and exports. This underscores the port's economic importance.

The Vessel's Capabilities

 

The vessel is remarkably capable for its size. It measures just 18 metres in length. It displaces a mere 37 tonnes. Despite this, it carries the latest survey equipment. This gathers astonishing amounts of data.

The sonar technology is particularly advanced. Its multibeam echo sounder sends over 500 pulses at once. It does this 400 times per second. In the Thames, a single ping covered up to 65 metres. The vessel can survey an area the size of a football pitch every 30 seconds.

 

The Survey Results

 

The survey produced highly detailed data. Over three months, it mapped the Thames in detail. It captured depth, topography and seabed type. This was achieved with centimetre accuracy. This provides an exceptionally precise picture.

The data is now being analysed by experts. The UK Hydrographic Office in Taunton is processing it. This office produces accurate navigation charts. These are used by both military and civilian vessels. This turns the raw data into practical navigation tools.

 

Additional Tasking and Next Steps

 

The vessel also surveyed a naval base. It covered waters around HMS President near Tower Bridge. This reservist base faces a punishing tidal regime. Spring tides move up to 30 million tonnes of water per cycle. This significantly affects the surrounding riverbed.

The vessel has now moved to new work. It has shifted focus to the East Coast. This includes surveying several military shipwrecks. One example is the light cruiser HMS Arethusa. That vessel was lost off Harwich after hitting a mine in 1916.
