LD Armateurs has completed installation of six Norsepower rotor sails on Spirit of Toulouse, the first of three new roll-on/roll-off vessels being built to transport Airbus aircraft components across the Atlantic. The vessels will carry aircraft parts between Europe and North America, each fitted with six rotor sails. The installation was followed immediately by commissioning work ahead of sea trials.

Details of the Installation

LD Armateurs has completed an installation. It fitted six rotor sails. These sit on a new vessel. It is the first of three. It serves Airbus.

The vessels have a clear purpose. They carry aircraft components. These cross the Atlantic. They link Europe and North America. They replace an existing fleet.

The Vessel Programme

The programme covers three vessels. The first was launched in early 2026. A sister followed in June. A third was on the slipway. A Chinese yard builds them.

The vessels carry specific cargo. These are aircraft parts. Wings feature. Fuselage sections are included. Engine components are carried.

The Propulsion System

The vessels use hybrid propulsion. Rotor sails feature. Each has six. These are tall structures. They harness wind.

The vessels also use engines. These are dual-fuel. Generators feature too. They run on several fuels. These include methanol variants.

The Commissioning Process

The installation led to commissioning. This followed immediately. All six sails are fitted. Testing will follow. Sea trials are planned.

The system needs optimisation. This continues during the voyage. It covers the maiden trip. Integration features. It links sails and controls.

The Contract Background

The programme has a clear origin. Airbus commissioned it in 2023. The owner builds and operates. It awarded the sail contract. A Finnish firm supplies them.

The owner has changed recently. It took a new name. A private equity firm invested. It holds a majority stake. This reshaped ownership.

Significance of the Installation

The installation advances decarbonisation. It cuts emissions sharply. Output more than halves. This targets 2030. It reduces industrial emissions.

The installation supports Airbus plans. The firm is ramping production. It replaces chartered vessels. These ferry subassemblies. It aligns with climate goals.
