Ocean Power Technologies has announced the successful completion of a proof of concept involving the offshore deployment of the amphibious Bayonet 150 Autonomous Underwater Ground Vehicle from a modified WAM-V 16 unmanned surface vessel. OPT modified the WAM-V to transport and deploy the 300-pound Bayonet 150, requested by Greensea IQ. During the test, the vessel carried the vehicle offshore, initiated a remotely triggered release and safely deployed its umbilical, with the vehicle completing its transit to the beach.

Details of the Test

OPT has completed a proof of concept. It involved a vehicle deployment. The vehicle is the Bayonet 150. It is an amphibious ground vehicle. It was deployed from a USV.

The test was requested by a partner. This was Greensea IQ. OPT modified its WAM-V 16. This transported the vehicle. It also deployed it offshore.

The Deployment Sequence

The test followed a defined sequence. The vessel carried the vehicle offshore. It initiated a remote release. It safely deployed the umbilical. The vehicle then operated independently.

The vehicle completed its mission. It operated under partner control. It transited from the release point. It reached the beach. This demonstrated the full sequence.

The Vehicle's Purpose

The vehicle serves specific missions. It is designed for amphibious operations. Surf-zone operations also feature. These are relevant to mine countermeasures. Other littoral missions are also covered.

The vehicle weighs 300 pounds. It is a ground vehicle. It works on the seabed. It transits to shore. This reflects its amphibious design.

The Combined Capability

The pairing creates a new capability. The USV and vehicle work together. This covers surface and seabed. They form one unmanned system. It handles both in a mission.

The vehicle deploys from the chassis. This is the USV's open chassis. This creates flexibility. It enables seabed missions. The partner highlighted this capability.

Significance of the Test

The test demonstrates modular infrastructure. Company leadership cited this. The WAM-V is adaptable. It carries specialised systems. These are partner systems.

The test reflects OPT's model. It need not own every component. It adapts its platform. This carries partner systems. The partners control them.
