India, China and the US are becoming major builders of battery-electric tugboats, while Turkey remains an important market, as demand rises, technology improves and production lines scale up. Rising interest in sustainable port operations and zero-emissions towage has led to an increase in the construction of harbour tugs with battery-electric or hybrid propulsion. There are around 75 active battery-electric tugs worldwide, with another 50 on order or under construction.

The Growing Market

Green tug construction is accelerating. This reflects rising interest. It concerns sustainable port operations. Zero-emissions towage drives demand. Battery-electric and hybrid tugs are growing.

Several factors support this growth. These vessels offer lower operating costs. They also reduce environmental impact. Government backing helps too. This mitigates higher capital costs.

The Market Scale

The market is substantial and growing. Around 75 battery-electric tugs are active. Another 50 are on order. These vary in storage capacity. This reflects strong demand.

Several countries lead this construction. India and the US are major builders. China and Turkey remain key nations. Spain leads in hybrid propulsion. These form the main building nations.

India's Emerging Dominance

India is emerging as a leader. This follows government programmes. These include a green tug programme. A Make in India strategy also features. These offer capacity from 2027.

Several Indian shipyards are active. Cochin builds for Svitzer and local owners. Another yard builds green tugs. Shoft launched India's first battery-electric tug. Others are also building such vessels.

The Panama Canal Operations

Panama has become a major operator. The Panama Canal Authority leads. It ordered 10 hybrid tugs from Spain. Almost all have been delivered. They operate in Panama.

The authority is expanding further. These tugs have strong specifications. They offer 80 tonnes of bollard pull. An extension covers 10 more tugs. These span the next three years.

The US and Other Markets

The US is building electric tugs. A Seattle yard builds for a California operator. The first two have launched. More will follow. These serve Los Angeles-area ports.

Other markets are also active. Texas yards build electric tugs. These serve Corpus Christi. Japan and Turkey also build such vessels. China has multiple yards building them.

The Technology Ecosystem

The market relies on key suppliers. Several battery manufacturers feature. Integrators support installation. These help shipyards. This underpins the construction.

The vessels vary in battery use. Some are battery-first designs. These provide most power. Others use batteries at lower levels. This covers transits and berthing.battery-electric-tugboat-construction
