BP has confirmed an oil discovery at the Algaita-01 exploration well offshore Angola, following reporting by Azule Energy. The well sits in Block 15/06, operated by Azule Energy, the 50:50 joint venture between BP and Eni, reinforcing the partnership’s role as the main vehicle for BP’s recent exploration momentum in the region.
What Algaita-01 Found and Why It Matters
Algaita-01 encountered multiple Upper Miocene oil-bearing sandstone intervals, with results indicating strong reservoir quality based on petrophysical interpretation. A full data acquisition program, including fluid sampling, helped confirm both reservoir characteristics and fluid properties. The discovery’s development attractiveness is supported by the presence of nearby infrastructure, which can reduce execution complexity and potentially shorten the timeline from appraisal to a future project decision.
Drilling Program and Location
The well was drilled using the Saipem 12000 drillship in 667 meters of water. Operations began with spudding on January 10, 2026, and the well is positioned roughly 18 kilometers from the Olombendo FPSO, a proximity that could improve tie-back economics if the resource proves commercially robust through appraisal work.

Equity Interests in Block 15/06
Azule Energy operates Block 15/06 with a 36.84% working interest. The co-venturers are SSI with 26.32% and Sonangol E&P with 36.84%, reflecting a partnership structure that blends international operatorship with significant national participation.
How It Fits into Azule’s Recent Track Record
Algaita-01 is described as the fourth significant hydrocarbon discovery since the beginning of 2025 for Azule Energy. It follows the Gajajeira01 gas find in Angola and the Volans-1X and Capricornus-1X discoveries in Namibia’s Orange Basin, indicating a broader exploration push across the South Atlantic margin with results spanning both oil and gas.
BP’s Upstream Signal
BP framed the discovery as part of a strong exploration year in 2025 and as a contribution to a growing portfolio of potential future developments. The company also referenced its wider exploration performance, citing 12 discoveries in 2025 across multiple basins, including Far South in the Gulf of America and a Santos Basin result at the Bumerangue block in Brazil, where BP holds full participation.
