Fugro has been awarded a contract by 50Hertz to deliver unexploded ordnance survey, identification and clearance services for the LanWin3 and LanWin6 offshore grid connection projects in the German North Sea. By identifying and addressing potential hazards, the work will help prepare the routes for the safe installation of high-voltage direct current cables. The cables will connect offshore wind farms to Germany’s electricity network.

Details of the Contract

Fugro has won a contract. A grid operator awarded it. It covers ordnance clearance. This spans two projects. They sit in the North Sea.

The work prepares cable routes. It identifies hazards. It addresses them. It enables safe installation. It supports grid connections.

The Grid Projects

The projects expand offshore wind. They form part of Germany’s effort. Each transmits substantial power. The combined capacity is large. It reaches 4 gigawatts.

The projects support the grid. They bring renewable power. This comes from the North Sea. It builds energy security. It meets climate targets.

The Survey Approach

The survey covers corridors. These are 200 metres wide. It follows the routes. It uses specialist systems. These detect objects.

The systems are advanced. They are magnetic arrays. Each has several sensors. They detect ordnance. They map potential targets.

The Follow-On Work

Later work will investigate targets. This follows in 2028. It uses remote vehicles. Detection systems feature. It examines selected targets.

The work includes removal. It clears debris. It disposes of confirmed ordnance. This follows regulations. It prepares the corridors.

The Safety Imperative

The work addresses a wider issue. Vast munitions remain at sea. These number over a million tonnes. They pose hazards. Clearance is essential.

The work enables safe development. It identifies risks. It removes them. It supports infrastructure. It protects installation.

Significance of the Contract

Company leadership cited the challenge. The ordnance is unknown until surveyed. A reliable picture helps. It aids planning. It supports certainty.

The contract supports the grid. It enables cable installation. It advances offshore wind. It strengthens security. It aids climate goals.
