Spanish container terminal TTI Algeciras is undergoing a major expansion of its handling infrastructure while investing in a new digital operating platform and digital twin technology. Jointly owned by Hyundai Merchant Marine and a CMA CGM-affiliated company, the semi-automated terminal in the Port of Algeciras Bay is raising annual capacity from 1.6 million to 2.1 million TEUs by 2028. As part of the investment, CyberLogitec will supply its Opus Terminal platform to manage vessel, yard, gate and equipment operations across one of Europe's leading transshipment hubs.

The Terminal and Its Strategic Position

TTI Algeciras occupies a significant position in European container shipping. The semi-automated terminal is located in the Port of Algeciras Bay in southern Spain. It is jointly owned by Hyundai Merchant Marine and a CMA CGM-affiliated investment company. This ownership links the terminal to two major forces in global container shipping. The joint structure combines shipping line interests with terminal operations.

The terminal serves as a key node in international trade routes. It is one of Europe's leading transshipment hubs for container traffic. The facility acts as a strategic gateway connecting Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. This positioning makes it a critical point for cargo moving between continents. Its role as a transshipment hub underlines its importance to regional trade flows.

The Capacity Expansion Project

The terminal is in the midst of a substantial infrastructure expansion. This is being carried out through the B1 Expansion project currently under way. The project will increase the terminal's annual capacity considerably. Current capacity of 1.6 million TEUs will rise to 2.1 million TEUs by 2028. This represents a significant boost to the terminal's throughput potential.

The expansion responds to the demands placed on major transshipment hubs. Growing container volumes require additional handling capacity at strategic gateways. Expanding capacity allows the terminal to accommodate more cargo and larger vessels. The 2028 timeline sets a clear horizon for the completion of new facilities. This investment positions the terminal to handle rising future demand.

Investment in Digital Operations

Alongside physical expansion, the terminal is investing heavily in digital systems. TTI Algeciras is installing a digital operating system to manage its operations. It will also use a digital twin to support the management of terminal activities. This integrated platform will oversee vessel, yard, gate and equipment operations. The combination of physical and digital investment reflects a comprehensive modernisation.

The digital platform is expected to deliver several operational benefits. The terminal operator anticipates improved operational visibility across its activities. The system is also intended to optimise terminal workflows more effectively. It is expected to support safer, more efficient and reliable terminal operations. These improvements aim to complement the increased capacity from the physical expansion.

The CyberLogitec Partnership

The digital transformation is being delivered through an external technology partner. Under an agreement signed in July 2026, CyberLogitec will provide its Opus Terminal platform. The company will also supply digital twin technology to support the semi-automated operations. This partnership brings specialised terminal software expertise to the project. It underpins the terminal's move toward more digitally managed operations.

The Opus platform offers advanced monitoring and simulation capabilities. It provides real-time visualisation of terminal activities and equipment status. This enables the operator to monitor operations as they happen. The system also allows the operator to simulate operational scenarios before acting. These capabilities support data-driven decision-making across the terminal.

Equipment and Vessel Handling Capability

The terminal is equipped to handle the largest container vessels afloat. TTI Algeciras is fully equipped to serve the latest generations of ultra large container ships. It operates with five Malaccamax and three Super Post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes. These cranes are designed to service vessels of considerable size and capacity. This equipment reflects the terminal's focus on large-scale container handling.

The terminal's automation extends throughout its handling operations. It operates 32 automatic stacking cranes for managing containers in the yard. It also uses 23 shuttle carriers to move containers around the facility. This equipment supports the terminal's semi-automated operating model. The combination of automation and digital management defines the terminal's modern approach.
