Seafood supply chain company Captain Fresh has raised Rs 290 crore in sustainability-linked financing from impact investor Blue Earth Capital. The company says the capital will support expansion of its global distribution footprint while strengthening sustainability initiatives across seafood value chains, signalling that growth funding is being linked more directly to measurable operational and environmental performance.
A Tech Led Model Targeting Traceability and Efficiency
Founded in 2020, Captain Fresh operates a technology-driven platform that integrates seafood sourcing, processing, and distribution. The company positions its digital operating system as a way to improve traceability and efficiency in a fragmented supply chain where quality control, compliance, and consistency can be difficult to manage across multiple geographies and supplier bases.
Global Brand Portfolio and Customer Reach
Captain Fresh sells packaged seafood through a set of brands that includes CenSea, Frime, Koral, Senecrus, ChopServe, Ocean Edge, and Ocean Garden. The company serves distributors and retailers across the United States, Europe, the UAE, India, and other markets, and reports a customer base of about 1,300 customers across more than 30 countries during FY25, with trading activity across more than 90 species including shrimp, salmon, tuna, and lobster.
Acquisitions Drive International Scale Up
The company has expanded globally through acquisitions, using established processors and distributors to build market access and infrastructure. It recently completed the acquisition of Spain-based tuna processor Frime and previously acquired Poland-based salmon company Koral, US-based importer CenSea, and France-based distributor Senecrus. The strategy suggests a focus on combining a central technology and operating layer with local processing and distribution capabilities in key seafood categories.
FY25 Performance Shows Higher Volumes and Profitability Shift
Captain Fresh reports a 2.5 times increase in gross merchandise value to Rs 3,421 crore in FY25 from Rs 1,395 crore in FY24. It also reports a shift to profitability with net profit of Rs 42 crore compared with a net loss of Rs 229 crore in the prior year, indicating improved unit economics and scale benefits at the same time as the company continues to expand across geographies and species categories.
