Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD) has presented AutoHook, a fully autonomous vessel recovery interface developed by its Norway-based subsidiary Vestdavit, at EURONAVAL 2026 in Paris on 2 November. Designed for uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) and other maritime craft, the system automates vessel capture and recovery without manual connections, with FMD reporting operational acceptance at Sea State 4.
AutoHook addresses one of the more challenging stages of maritime launch and recovery operations, where crew members traditionally handle connections between vessels and lifting equipment. According to FMD, existing autonomous systems have struggled to operate beyond Sea State 2, while AutoHook has demonstrated capability under the more demanding Sea State 4 conditions.
The system uses onboard cameras, integrated thrusters, and automated controls to track and secure a vessel during recovery. After deploying a mechanical floating catching device, AutoHook autonomously locates and connects with the craft, reducing the need for personnel to work near moving equipment in rough seas.

Its compact design lets the unit attach to existing davit wires without modifying winches or lifting structures. Vision technology, propulsion, power, and control systems are integrated into a single assembly, enabling installation on vessels equipped with compatible launch and recovery systems.
FMD said AutoHook was developed to support interoperability across allied naval fleets and aligns with NATO operational standards. The technology could help naval operators expand the use of uncrewed vessels by reducing recovery risks and improving operational flexibility in challenging conditions.
Rolf Andreas Wigand, Managing Director of Davits at FMD, said the system addresses the difficulty of establishing reliable automated connections between ships and smaller craft in demanding sea conditions.
The company has not disclosed commercial orders, pricing, or delivery timelines for AutoHook.
