Marine equipment manufacturer MacGregor has secured a contract to upgrade programmable logic controllers (PLCs) on 35 Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) vessels operated by Wallenius Wilhelmsen. Announced on 30 October 2026, the program will modernize control systems for the vessels' quarter ramps, with installations scheduled around vessel availability and sailing operations.

The contract was recorded in MacGregor's third-quarter 2026 order intake. The upgrades will replace aging PLC systems used to control quarter-ramp operations, supporting equipment reliability and reducing the risk of operational disruptions. MacGregor originally supplied equipment during the vessels' design and construction phases, extending its involvement into fleet maintenance and modernization.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen will retain the replaced controllers onboard for use as spare parts on other roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) equipment or compatible vessels. This arrangement supports equipment reuse and reduces unnecessary disposal, aligning with the shipping company's sustainability objectives.

Tom Forrester-Coles, Fleet Manager of Technical Marine Operations Management at Wallenius Wilhelmsen, said standardizing the management of aging equipment across the fleet would help maintain dependable systems and minimize service interruptions.

Tomas Hakala, Executive Vice President of Global Services at MacGregor, described the program as a continuation of the company's long-standing relationship, extending support from vessel construction through operational modernization.

MacGregor has not disclosed the contract value or a completion date. The retrofit schedule will depend on the 35 vessels' operational availability.
