The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) led a high-level discussion on the role of Artificial Intelligence in strengthening ocean governance and accelerating Blue Economy growth at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

The panel, titled “AI for Our Oceans of Tomorrow: Data, Models and Governance,” focused on using AI-driven analytics, digital ocean infrastructure and open data systems to enhance marine disaster preparedness, fisheries management, coastal resilience and sustainable resource use.

M. Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department, emphasized integrating AI-enabled models with traditional forecasting systems to address climate risks such as ocean warming and sea-level rise. He also highlighted India’s Deep Ocean Mission as a key initiative for sustainable marine development.

Norway’s Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, underscored growing India–Norway cooperation in oceans and the Blue Economy, noting AI’s potential in fisheries, shipping and port efficiency through open and interoperable digital systems.

Experts concluded that India is well-positioned to lead the Global South in building Digital Ocean Infrastructure supported by AI, open data and strong governance frameworks, unlocking long-term sustainable growth in ocean-based sectors.
