Italian engineering and certification group RINA has signed a three-year contract worth €11 million with Petrobras to provide subsea engineering, asset integrity and decommissioning support for offshore infrastructure in Brazil. Announced on 5 November 2026, the agreement covers technical assessments and engineering studies to support the safe operation, maintenance and eventual decommissioning of subsea assets.

The contract includes integrity assessments of subsea pipelines and risers, reliability studies, maintenance evaluations and asset life extension analyses. RINA will also conduct technical studies for subsea decommissioning projects, helping Petrobras assess operational risks and plan interventions across different stages of an asset's lifecycle.

The engineering work will include Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), and Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) studies. These assessments will help evaluate equipment performance, identify potential failures and inform decisions on whether infrastructure can remain operational or requires maintenance, modification or decommissioning.

RINA expects to mobilize up to 83 engineers and specialized technicians under the contract, including approximately 45 existing specialists. The workforce may expand during the three years depending on project requirements.

Marcell Chiarelli, LATAM Executive Commercial Management Director at RINA, said the agreement would provide Petrobras with technical assessments to support decisions on the integrity and decommissioning of subsea systems.

The contract strengthens RINA's existing relationship with Petrobras and expands its involvement in offshore asset lifecycle management in Brazil. The company has not disclosed which specific offshore fields or subsea installations it will assess.
